The 3 C’s of Addiction Recovery: Cure

The 3 C’s of Addiction Recovery, Part 2: Cure

Watching a spouse, child or any loved one in the throes of addiction is heart breaking. As a family member, we usually want to fix any tough situation for someone we love. Unfortunately, in the case of addiction there is no cure through regular medical remedies. This idea is the second “C” in the three C’s of addiction that is meant to help family members move through the process of recovery.

  1. I didn’t cause it
  2. I can’t cure it
  3. I can’t control it

“I Can’t Cure It”

The second C, Cure, is a way to help family members understand that addiction is a chronic brain disease and as much as you may want to cure it for your loved one, you cannot. Just like a person cannot rationalize and cure someone’s diabetes, you cannot “fix” your loved one’s addiction.

“Can’t ‘Love’ it Away”

Family members may try, but they have to understand that no amount of these things will cure the addiction:

– Loving
– Pleading
– Bribing
– Reasoning

What’s the Closest Thing to a Cure?

Someone who is addicted can never be fully rid of their disease, but they can learn to manage it. The only way to truly recover is through a rehab program. With treatment, life-long recovery is possible.

Your loved one can lead a sober life if they are willing to put in the work. With good aftercare from a treatment center, along with relapse prevention programs and a good support system, long-term recovery can happen. You can be that hope and support for a family member going through the treatment process.

What Should You Do?

While you may often feel helpless in this journey, being part of a strong support system for your loved one is the one major thing you can do to help. In order to be there for someone in addiction recovery, you need strength, as well.

  • Don’t be afraid to get help for yourself
  • There is no shame in asking for support
  • Attend a support group like Al-Anon or Nar-Anon
  • Seek therapy for yourself so you have an outlet
  • Attend the family therapy sessions the treatment facility offers

Managing the Disease is Possible
