The Importance of Fitness and Nutrition for Addiction Recovery

Addiction can severely impact a person’s fitness and nutrition. Some substances, like Adderall, can cause weight loss and unhealthy eating habits. Others, like alcohol, can lead to weight gain and an increased appetite. In addition, many drugs, including opiates and meth, can cause dehydration. All of these effects can lead to serious health problems.

That’s why at Footprints Beachside Recovery, we believe that fitness and nutrition are crucial for addiction recovery. By focusing on healthy eating and exercise, patients can begin to heal and put healthy habits into practice.

How We Work Nutrition and Fitness into Your Treatment

Activities like cooking for yourself and exercising have a way of triggering healthy self-discovery. But rediscovering who you are and what you like again can’t happen if someone is cooking for you and telling you what exercises to do. We use these activities throughout your treatment program in order to mimic real life as much as possible.

Diet and Nutrition

To help you eat healthily, our dietician comes in twice a month to coach you on proper diet and nutrition, so you can begin cooking for yourself while in treatment. You’ll also be given an allowance every Sunday to purchase weekly groceries for healthy meals. Proper guidance and being held accountable for your own meal prep will provide you with the confidence to take care of yourself and eat right after leaving treatment.

Fitness

Research has found that exercise offers an extensive list of benefits. Not only does it help strengthen your muscles and bones, but it also brightens your mood, increases your energy levels, and even improves your brain function and memory. When you’re in treatment, you’ll have access to a gym six days a week where you can run, bike, lift weights, and more. With daily opportunities to go to the gym, you’ll develop healthy exercise habits to take with you when you leave our treatment facility.
