Outpatient Treatment Options for Addiction Therapy

When you first start looking at treatment options for a drug or alcohol addiction, it can be overwhelming to see the variety of treatment options. You may see words like residential, day/night treatment, intensive outpatient and more. Starting this journey to sobriety can be the hardest and bravest step to take. Don’t let confusing jargon hold you back from your recovery.

If attending a traditional drug rehab (a residential program where you live there 24 hours/day) is not an option because of life responsibilities, there are a few types of outpatient programs that might be for you.

These are often beneficial for people who have already completed a residential (inpatient) rehab and can use these programs as a step-down or who, for various reasons, require an outpatient setting:

Day/Night Treatment Program
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Benefits of Outpatient Treatment

These programs do not require you living at the rehab facility and the treatments are only administered during the day. The only difference between PHP and IOP is the number of days and hours spent in therapy.

Day/Night Treatment

This typically requires 5 days per week in therapy and around 6 hours each day. Participants of our day/night treatment program can experience the following benefits:

  • A way to transition out of residential treatment without jumping completely back into your old life
  • Group and individual therapy opportunities
  • You typically have more work to do (following residential rehab) but don’t need a 24-hour setting.
  • Can be a good resource after relapse to get back on track
  • Can include medication-assisted treatment
  • The same care as residential rehab without spending the night
  • Includes family resources and education
  • Offers holistic healing methods
  • More intense than care from a doctor’s or therapist’s office

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

This is a shorter program with about 3 days a week and around 3 hours per day spent in treatment. It also does not require overnights and all therapy is given during the day. The benefits of this type of program include:

  • Shorter hours than day/night treatment
  • Includes a lot of group therapy sessions
  • Opportunity to develop relapse prevention skills
  • Provides individual treatment plans
  • Beneficial step-down program after residential rehab or even after day/night treatment
  • Provides aftercare support
  • Treatment is administered by physicians, psychologists, nurses or other professionals

How are These Different from Traditional Rehab?

All of the programs – inpatient and outpatient – can be completed in a rehab facility and utilize the activities at a treatment center like yoga or art therapy. However, while outpatient programs aim for the same outcome, there are some major differences between these and a traditional residential rehab:

– Outpatient programs do not require overnight stays.
– They are beneficial if you just can’t get away because of a job or other personal responsibilities.
– They work as a step-down program after a residential stay.

Deciding Which is Best

With so many choices, how do you know which is best for you and your level of addiction? Residential programs might be more effective as you are completely away from your dangerous environment for a long period time. First-time participants might not be as successful in an outpatient program even though they can be very enticing.

So who is a good candidate for day/night treatment or IOP?

– Day/night treatment is good for someone who needs to maintain the normalcy of a regular life.
– IOP is useful if your behaviors and addiction do not interfere with the ability to function at home, work or school.
– PHP and day/night treatment will cost less than a residential program.
– Ideal clients for day/night treatment have severe symptoms but not enough to warrant 24 hour/day care.

If you’re still not sure what program is right for you, our quiz can help you determine if you should enroll in day/night treatment.
